Dear ____________:

I am contacting you today to respectfully ask that you post Senate Bill #54 for a vote in the Senate Health Human Services and Aging Committee.

Senate Bill 54, the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Education Act, is a piece of legislation that will help promote awareness of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), more generally known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD).

CRPS is a chronic neurological syndrome whose symptoms include severe burning pain and extreme sensitivity to touch. Although this syndrome was first diagnosed during the Civil War, many health care professionals still do not fully understand this syndrome. For those who develop CRPS, early diagnosis is the key to a positive medical outcome. CRPS can become very debilitating.

To date, five states have already enacted this legislation; New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Michigan and most recently, New Jersey. This bill does not include an appropriation and will not cost the state any additional money to enact. It simply sets up an education program in the Department of Health where health care professionals and the general public can go to for information about diagnosis and treatment of this disease and establishes November as “Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Awareness Month.”

While there are many important health care issues currently facing Ohio, to the estimated 1.2 million Americans who are suffering from CRPS, enacting this simple, no-cost piece of legislation will show that the State of Ohio is willing to take action to aid those suffering from this disease.

For more information on CRPS, please feel free to contact the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association website, www.rsds.org for more information about this syndrome. I thank you for your attention and look forward to working with you in the future on behalf of the estimated 1.2 million Americans who live with CRPS every day.

Sincerely,
